A Fairyland in Glasgow
Competition Project in Glasgow School of Art
‘A fairyland in the Glasgow’ was my feeling after a site visit. Glasgow has an image of an industrial city. The impression of an industrial city usually is old, dirty and heavy. Hence, the hotel has a green space in the centre of the city, just like a fairyland.
Based on the Georgian architectural style of the hotel, a symmetrical layout plan could be shaped easily to fulfil various purposes. Inspired by Chinoiserie patterns, the curve of the hill is a main element which is used in partitions to create a movement of hills visually. Combining hills with green space, a completed and gorgeous picture is in the centre of this city.

Final Layout Plan
People come to Glasgow for various purposes, but the hotel is always the same stop for them to recharge their batteries and escape from reality.
In this bar salon, they can enjoy a classic afternoon tea and a glass of champagne in a lovely daytime in an open area; they also can taste a cup of exclusive whiskey at night with a moment of silence in a half-private whiskey house. There is no embarrassment for people who come alone since tables by the window with the scenery of Blythwood Square are prepared. Unexpected memorable moments are also waiting for you to create in the snug with your mates.

Concept of Partition Patterns
Georgian-style design features are the main inspirations in this design proposal. Symmetry can be reflected in the layout plan. Besides, Chinoiserie is one of the features which also can be related to Fairyland. The theme in traditional Asian artworks generally is Fairyland - a place with peace. Poets and artists usually use natural elements which mainly are plants, animals and hills to create a picture of the ideal Fairyland in their mind. Those elements, therefore, are the main characters in Chinoiserie's artworks. A beautiful green park in front of the hotel, Blthwood Square has all elements except hills. Hence, I chose hills to become the main idea in this design as a piece of an essential puzzle in a complete picture.
