Gartloch Nursing Home
Graduated Project in Glasgow School of Art
Due to the rapidly ageing population, the need for senior residence and medicine would be a considerable issue in our future society. However, the quality of nursing homes often varies and is easy stigma. Hence, I chose this as my final year of studying the topic to develop a large-scale nursing home with a hotel-like experience and quality lifestyle. Gartloch Hospital became my final site decision which was an extensive and potential site because it was a mental hospital before and was abandoned at the end of the 90s. It was also surrounded by large green areas and not far from the town. Because the hospital was too large, I only selected several buildings of the main building. Gartloch Nursing Home was not only a place of residence, it was a multi-functional hospital, providing various therapies for senior residents while giving a full support workplace for staff.

▍Design Concept
Phase means any stage in the process of development. It also represents a conceptual scheme of ‘Five phases’ (including metal, water, wood, fire, and earth) in this project. It comes from a traditional Chinese philosophy to explain interactions and relationships between phenomena and the life cycle. With an additional two elements (sun and moon) as seven elements to describe cosmic agents of change.

In this nursing home, five elements are applied to five buildings to present the privacy of space and its characteristics. Every building was designed to run independently with the same basic areas such as nurse stations, specific therapy rooms, staff changing rooms and relaxation areas. Therapy areas are separated into seven buildings instead of gathering in the same location or building to encourage inpatients to walk out.
