Puma X Bamboo Theatre

Winner - 2022 Retail Design Student Awards | Project in Glasgow School of Art

Designing a pop-up store for Puma, I strike the right balance of sustainability, brand concept and interior design. Before that, I reviewed various projects of Puma worldwide to understand the brand message and look for a suitable concept for this project. Finally, I used bamboo theatre which is an intangible cultural heritage and a unique and local way to build scaffolding in southeast Asia to build a pop-up store. Bamboo could be ideally reused in different ways to lower the waste of construction, which also match the brand marketing image.

▍Concept

The concept of Puma's store usually uses local cultures to put into the design. For example, comic elements were used in the changing room of the flagship store in Osaka Japan. There is no special location for this conceptual project, hence, I decided to use my hometown - Hong Kong's special building scaffolding as a design concept for the pop-up store. Bamboo scaffolding is ubiquitous in Hong Kong. Speedy, low cost and architectural aesthetics make it also widely used in construction works in the world, especially in Africa and South Asia. This building method is also suitable for building a short-term pop-up store.

▍Experience

The bamboo theatre is a framework of the temporary shed for Cantonese Opera performances, its building method is a kind of complex and difficult craft of bamboo scaffolding. Due to the shortage of craftsmen, the bamboo theatre also is listed in the intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong. Therefore, I believe this is a very valuable and unique experience for people to take a glaze of this culture by going to a pop-up store. For Puma, as a global and famous brand, it is also a good chance to gain positive images in the market and among customers by using such special crafts in their stores to create concerns in the world.

▍Construction

1. Using fir beams as main supports

2. Using bamboo to build a frame

3. Laying metal sheets as a cover

4. Laying wooden strips as floor

5. Only need 2-3 weeks and 10-15 experienced workers in the whole process

Bamboo can be re-used as the frame of small stalls in markets

The bamboo is not suitable to use as a building structure after 2-3 times re-using because the strength becomes lower. But it still could be used as vegetable trellis in gardens

Fragile bamboo could be a material of handicrafts and small size of furniture such as stool

Bamboo would be burned  finally and become fertilizer for new plants
